Awards recognise Wales’ golf talent

Ian Woosnam, Welsh ambassador in the run-up to The 2010 Ryder Cup, was among the winners at the Ryder Cup Wales annual gala dinner and awards, sponsored by CCV in conjunction with the Golf Union of Wales, recently held at The Vale Hotel, Golf and Spa Resort.

Woosnam was named Tour Professional of the Year for his achievements in 2008, which included winning the Parkridge Polish Seniors Championship and the Russian Seniors Open, as well as making the cut in the US Masters.

Darren Griffiths of Glyn Abbey Golf Club was named Golf Development Wales (GDW) Professional of the Year as an excellent example of a PGA professional who understands the benefits of doing fundamental work at grass roots level.

He mixes his commitments at beginner level with elite individual coaching making him a true asset to Welsh golf. His accomplishments include: mentoring a PGA Level 2 volunteer coach to help recruit and coach new juniors; running two 5x60 beginner clubs with that PGA Level 2 volunteer; coaching the Welsh Special Olympics golf squad; running a Dragon Golf Starter Centre; helping GDW to pilot the new golf resources for Key Stage 3 of the National Curriculum; acting as a consultant on the GDW Guide to Clubs on Junior Golf CD-ROM; and being one of the GUW / PGA nominated coaches for the ground-breaking PGA Level 4 qualification.

First Minister, Rhodri Morgan, who was present at the annual awards dinner, said: “I would like to congratulate all four winners on their achievements at these awards and in realising that quality is key to success. The eyes of the world will be on Wales in 2010 and a huge amount of work is being done to ensure that not only The Celtic Manor Resort, but Wales as a whole, is ready to host this great sporting contest.”

READ THIS IF YOU WANT LOWER SCORES.

The worldwide average golf handicap has not changed in 30 years despite the huge advances in technology made in the industry and claims of instant improvements by the leading manufactures (bigger headed drivers, club fitting etc etc ..).

I like you am one who believes this has made the game easier to hit the ball no question, but why have scores not lowered in 30 years?

Why is your handicap not coming down after spending £100 or £200 on the latest custom fitted driver?

Well, this because hitting the fairway that little bit longer will have no guarantee you will have a better score at the end of the hole.

The club that has the biggest influence on your scores is the putter. The club you use the most is your putter. It does have the final say! Hit two to three fairways per round and you can still finish the round above your handicap…. Have 2-3 less putt less per round and that WILL give you lower scores.

I have just returned from a seminar with Dr Paul Hurrion in Coventry coach for the tour stars namely, Padraig Harrington, Darren Clarke, Lee Westwood, Maarten Lafeber, Paul McGinley, David Howell, Ross McGowan, Philip Archer, Henrik Stenson and Graham McDowell as well as the Hong Kong Elite Junior Squad. This guy is at the cutting edge of golf coaching. He give me the theories and scientific fact on aim set up, stoke and putter fitting which can be yours for a fraction of the cost he would charge. www.paulhurrion.com

I have also visited Dave Hicks in Bournemouth for a one-day seminar who make putters from

scratch at his factory using aerospace technology who has clients namely Airbus, Red Bull formula F1racing team and Mclaren F1 racing team, where I witnessed the technology that goes into these putters first hand as well as the importance of putter fitting. We also had coaching on putter software to identify putting faults for tour standard and handicap golfers. www.davehicksgolf.com www.higar.com

Putter length, lie, weight and head type will have massive influence on your ability to hole more putts, how good does you putter suit you and your stroke type?

Have you ever had a putting lesson? Have you checked you putters suitability

Putters can be altered for very little money.

Does your stroke feel off line? Do you miss in the same place every game?

Book your putter consultation NOW! How important is a properly fitted putter? It is considered that putting is about 43% of the average golfer's score. If it is important enough to have correctly fitted irons and woods, which represents 57% of your score for 13 clubs, then 43% for one club is extremely important.
