Glyn Abbey Juniors second in Dyfed - by one point!

Well, we did all we could in the final event. We had to place first and we needed another team to beat Milford to make up for us falling a second point behind after coming second to them at Penrhos.

We did manage to win - quite convincingly, including an outstanding net from Ashley, but we were the only team to beat Milford and second place for them was enough for them to win the overall league by a point from us. This just shows how narrow the margin is with 2 good teams turning out in force to every event.

Missed by a Shot

Penrhos being tough and it being very windy on the mountain contributed to a day when scoring was never going to be net par. The only issue was how few shots over this players could contain themselves to. Milford had 2 better gross scores than us and 3 worse net scores. When we added up (unofficially, awaiting publishing by Dyfed) they got to 398 against our 399. Our 6th card would also have been better than theirs, so any one shot found anywhere in the counting scores would have meant us winning and going into the final event all square at the top. It wasn't to be and we are now 2 points behind, needing not only to win at Derllys, but also hoping for another team to beat Milford into third to tie, into 4th to win.

Milford and Dyfed Championships

This was always going to be tough and Milford had to be favourite to win. We had to make sure we came second if we could not come first, but we certainly didn't go to lose. Hopes were dashed when Liam went 7 off the tee on the first, closely followed by Nick Rees's 5 off the tee and even Luke's 3 off the tee. Liam battled back to a very commendable 82 in the end, which was a counting gross. The other was Nick Daniels', which was looking like being 74 until 4 shots slipped away on the last 3 holes.

Luke came back as well to a net 70 and Liam M and Kim contributed net 69s, showing once again how important the practice round, planners etc all are to the net scores.

The scores were enough to secure second, leaving only 1 point between us and Milford with 2 events to go.

Home Win and Carmarthenshire Championships

In brief : We beat Milford and placed first - just! - which put us in joint first place for the first time ever in the Club's history. We did this with 5 players away and only 8 playing! Home advantage helps of course.

Liam Shiggins won the gross and is Carmarthenshire County Champion for the second year running. Amazingly, Luke also won the net County Championship for the second year running - this is a sign of a constantly improving golfer.

353 was the combined team score with gross 71, gross 79 and nets of 66, 67 and 70. Amazing! This is the best score we have ever carded - 350 would be considered "perfect". Milford had 356, which shows how tight it was.

Who's the good looking guy in the middle?

Tenby Success

Well done to everyone who played, not just those whose scores counted! Who would have ever thought the team would win up there. The practice round made a huge difference, especially to the net scores for those who had not played before, but most important is making sure we get the full side there with 10 medal scores to choose from, each being the best any individual can manage on the day - and always completing a card. Have a look at the picture below to see what impressed the Club - they took this and sent it to us.

Scandinavian Night Fundraiser

Following on from French Night, the Scandinavian Night raised another £195. Total funds raised through these meals now amounts to a staggering £1,350! This has been the source of everything the team have been able to do this year.

French Night Fundraiser

French Night on Friday 3rd April was a huge success - possibly aided by Martin's trip to France to source certain ingredients (oh and a couple of bottles of wine for himself!) £285 was raised and everybody had a great time. Surprise dish voted best by most people was the home made pate de campagne, making all the effort that goes into making this from scratch rather than buying in worthwhile. The bouillabaise was also cleaned out within gthe first few minutes, so who says nobody likes fish soup? Well done Loraine.

Shirt Sponsor!

A huge thanks to Peter Evans of P&S Services Ltd of Trimsaran for sponsoring this season's team shirts which are now on order. Anyone needing drain jetting or similar services should use Peter's company and can contact them on 01554 810846. The shirts are supplied through the Pro shop at wholesale cost (ie no profit) to help make this possible so express your thanks there as well!

New Professional Appointed

Mike Davies who came down to take the last 2 saturday morning lessons will be joining us as our new head professional, following on where Darren left off. He has 10 years experience, has been Head Professional at Bowood and Alice Springs, coached men's county in Gwent, Glamorgan and Wiltshire and is NLP (the Karl Morris mind thing) certified and a REPS level 3 qualified personal trainer, so covering golf conditioning as well as swing and mind. I can't replace Darren, but I can fill the vacant post with the best person available, which is what I have done. How he got on with you guys was a key part of the appointment, so please make him welcome.

This Saturday (21st March) we will be having a discussion on the first OOM event on 15th April at Newport, the possibility of a practice round there and my ongoing plans for team coaching.

22nd February 2009

Hole in One for Martin

Finally, after 10 years of near misses and, to be fair, trying every time a ball was hit from a tee!!, Martin has made a hole in one on his own course on Sunday 22nd February. Not his first hole in one, but his first at Glyn Abbey, despite having the greens cut or rolled or shaped to suit, or tees adjusted, hole cut bigger and everything else he could have the greens staff do! You are bound to hear the shot described in detail numerous times, but here it is : a 9 iron hit firm into the wind, having considered and rejected the option of hitting an 8 iron softly. A straight flight, never deviating from its line directly at the pin, a mid flight cry of "now that's a proper golf shot" from the originator, a bounce just past the pin, just enough backspin bringing the ball back into the centre of the cup.

March 2009

Another Junior fundraising success.

The Spanish Tapas theme went down a storm on Friday 6th March, attracting 54 people and raising a further £270. Nice to see so many juniors there as well, trying new things! A massive thank you to the supporters of all the events. Next event is French night on Friday 3rd April so try to persuade parents and friends to buy tickets asap.

All you can eat for £10, £5 of which will go to the junior section.

The night starts a 7pm, all are welcome and tickets are available from any member of staff.

Don't delay.

Please do your part to make this night a success as you will all benefit from the money raised. SELL SELL SELL...Pretty please!

1st January 2009

Junior Team Members walk on water???????

We all know how good the team is, but this may be going a bit far - and what is that rake doing there?

30th September 20098

Glyn Abbey's Juniors place third in the Dyfed Order of Merit 2008, narrowly missing out on second.

A better turn out at Trefloyne (only 2 counting score cards) would have made the difference in coming second or possibly even winning! We have the players to win this next year, provided you all use the winter to practice and improve and make use of Team coaching on Saturday mornings. The order of merit events are announced in February / March and the key to winning the league is turning out our 10 best players to every event. Buses will be on, the rest is up to you!
