History of Glyn Abbey Golf
Course and Club
Glyn Abbey Golf Course, designed by leading golf course
architects Hawtree and
Son, was built by British Coal as part of its restoration
plan following completion of opencast coaling operations. The layout
and construction of the course had a total cost of some £1,500,000.
The Course was opened for play
in 1992 and is now coming into maturity. The
present management took over in August 1998 and have been responsible
for numerous improvements to the quality of the Course as well as
the construction of the Clubhouse, the Driving Range and numerous
other Facilities.
They also formed a new Committee
from among the Members to run the Club itself and joined both the
Welsh Golfing Union and the Dyfed Golfing Union to provide the benefits
of affiliation to the Membership.
At the same time, PGA Professional
Darren Griffiths has been brought in to provide teaching and other
services to Members and visitors alike.
More developments will be seen
as Glyn Abbey Golf Club continues to grow.
In Winter 2002 a separate Golf Club was constituted, completely
independent of the management and ownership of the course run entirely
by the members for the benefit of the members and controlling all
competition, handicapping and social matters.
